About elbo
Elbo is a unique collection of designer bags that are designed and made exclusively by the label. It is a collection that is fed by the founder of the label Emma Burton’s passion for collecting designer and vintage textiles. Elbo bags are distinctive because of the unique and juxtaposing combinations of prints, colour and pattern that Emma places together. The style of the bag gathers the fabric in a way that it manages to transform even the simplest pieces of fabric into a tactile and sculptural 3d shape through the use of rouching, pleating and fabric manipulation. An ornamental knot in the form of a bow finishes off each bag to create an extremely feminine and bag. Each bag requires a proportionally large quantity (3 times the width of the bag) of fabric in order to achieve the desired shape.
Inspiration for the silhouette of the bag came from the voluminous silhouettes and heavy construction of period costume that Emma studied from within the extensive archives of the V&A and Bath costume museum.
The full Elbo collection consists of reversible handbags, handbags, tote bags and a bridal collection.
Each bag in any one fabric combination is only made in small quantities from 1 to 30 pieces and each is made in the UK.
Elbo bridal collection
The elbo bridal collection consists of a range of 100% silk bridal handbags and clutch bags. Each one is decorated either with a handmade silk bow or handmade silk roses, a hand tied bow and glamorous Swarovski crystals and each bag is made to order.
History
The elbo label was started by textile and costume designer Emma Burton who graduated from the Royal College of Art with an MA in textiles and a fashion degree from Northumbria University.
After working for and selling her textile prints to world renowned designers such as Alexander McQueen, Alberta Ferretti and Donna Karan Emma was desperate to start her own label that utilised her obsession for fabric and print. She wanted to create a product that expressed femininity and was unique; a product that would appeal to women who were confident and who wanted to have fun with fashion but at the same time was a practical object. The result was the Elbo bag which bag took months of trials to get just right and even today the bag is constantly being updated.
Elbo has been acclaimed in publications such as Vogue and television programs such as WAGS Boutique where the label sold out in a matter of hours after being chosen out of twelve up and coming fashion accessory designers.
In 2009 Emma started another fashion accessories label under her own name using printed fabrics that Emma designs herself. The full collection consists of of scarves, bags, purses and cushions.
